2017-Earlier

Layered meaning and concepts in poetry, science, and Greek philosophy often inform my paintings, either suggestively or quite literally by embedding text from these sources nearly illegibly into the surface of layers of paint. I’m interested in how we integrate the physical world and the inner invisible world, how even the most obscure and ordinary aspects of lived experience provoke awe and reveal mysterious spirit. No thought or thing presents itself as utterly passive or inert, but is meaningfully connected, charged with complex content and a sentient presence.

"We are charged with the transmutation, the resurrection, the transfiguration of all things.  For how can we save what is visible if not by using the language of absence, of the invisible?  And how to speak this language that remains mute unless we sing it with abandon and without any insistence of being understood."   ~Rainer Maria Rilke
